How does AI Coverage Analysis work?

This guide explains how AI Coverage Analysis uses AI to analyse media coverage

Written by Cision

AI Coverage Analysis

Important: AI Coverage Analysis is a restricted feature and is not available across all packages, regions, or user permissions. Availability depends on your organization’s subscription, feature enablement, and user access level. If you do not have access, please contact your Account Manager for details.

AI Coverage Analysis is a premium feature available within the CisionOne AI assistant.

It helps you turn media coverage data into clear, actionable insights by analysing mentions and key metrics using natural language.

Rather than summarising results at a surface level, AI Coverage Analysis connects trends across coverage volume, sentiment, spikes, and potential audience reach.

It highlights what is driving those trends and suggests next steps, reducing the need to manually interpret charts or scan large Mention Streams.

Workflow

Initiation

Access the AI assistant from the top-right corner of the CisionOne platform.

To begin, select the Analyse my coverage option within the AI assistant.

If your organisation does not have AI Coverage Analysis enabled, you will see preview screens highlighting the feature and its capabilities.

Sending a request

You can start an analysis by selecting a preset template or by typing a custom question into the assistant.

Preset templates are available for general overview, coverage volume, sentiment, coverage spike analysis, and potential audience reach.

What is a focus area?

A focus area is the topic you want to analyse. You can define it in two ways:

  1. Existing Mention Streams
Select an existing Mention Stream using the picker or typeahead.

  2. Ad‑hoc focus areas
Enter a custom topic and the assistant will automatically retrieve relevant coverage.

Using typeahead features and pickers

  1. When using templates, select the highlighted pills to choose a Mention Stream or adjust the date range.

  2. When typing a custom question, use a hash symbol (#) or the picker to reference a specific Mention Stream.

  3. Use the @ symbol or filters to narrow results by source or media type.

  4. Contextual tips appear as you type to help refine your query.

What makes a good query?

Examples of effective queries

  1. Analyse coverage volume for Sydney over the last 7 days.

  2. What was the sentiment for online articles about Nike over the last month?

  3. When did positive coverage spike for Bad Bunny in the past 24 hours?

Examples of unclear queries

  1. Analyse Sydney

  2. Nike

  3. Spikes for Bad Bunny

Processing

Once submitted, the assistant gathers and analyses the relevant data. A loading indicator shows the progress while your request is being processed.

Structured Output

Responses adapt based on your request and may include several of the sections below.

Summary

A concise explanation of key trends and themes.

Analysis

A short breakdown (typically 3–5 points) explaining what is driving the results.

For metric‑specific requests, the analysis adapts to the chosen metric. For example, sentiment analysis focuses on the dominant sentiment categories, while spike analysis centres the explanation around the date range of the spike.

Suggestions

The assistant returns up to three suggestions at a time. Suggestions shown adapt based on the user’s available modules, with preview screens displayed if access is not enabled.

Actionable recommendations such as:

  • Creating new Mention Streams

  • Opening Instant Insights to build dashboards

  • Drafting social posts

  • Drafting media outreach

Data visualisation

Relevant charts displayed directly within the conversation.

Charts may be shown by default for overview requests or generated on demand for focused metric queries.

Follow‑up questions

Suggested questions to explore additional angles, filters, metrics, or specific articles.

Interactive mentions

A list of contributing articles where you can filter, tag, or export results.

Tip: For general overview requests, all sections may be included. More focused metric requests typically show a summary, analysis, and follow‑up questions. Additional charts or suggestions can be requested through follow‑up prompts.
